DIY Crochet Wig Guide: Beginner & Budget-Friendly!

by HOTBRAIDS

DIY crochet wigs are a perfect option for girls who like switching up their styles, since they require the easiest installation and removal skill. Making a crochet wig is not difficult but still takes time — so choosing high-quality human crochet hair to make it reusable is much more worthwhile than spending hours on a synthetic wig you’ll only use once or twice. However, for beginners, there are still some tricky points, such as how to crochet the hair to create a natural falling movement, conceal the front edges, or make the sparse top look invisible.

Don’t worry — you don’t need to be a pro. With a few simple tricks, you can make a crochet wig that looks natural, lasts long, and gets your investment back — even on your first try. Let’s dive in.

How to Make a Crochet Wig?

Tools you will need:

  • Crochet wig cap(choose a durable cap to ensure your DIY wig lasts long)
  • Human crochet hair(recommended:high-quality human hair for reusability)
  • Wig mannequin
  • Hair rack or hanger
  • Latch hook
  • Wig stand
  • Ball head pins
  • Snap clips
  • Scissors

Step by step guide:

1.Section and place your human crochet hair

Take your human crochet hair and separate it into tiny, even small strands. Place them onto a hair rack or hanger. This will make your DIY process much easier and faster.

2.Adjust the wig cap size to make it fit

Put the crochet wig cap on your head to measure the size. If its larger than you need, simply twist the top, sew the twisted part shut, and cut off the remainder. A well-fitted cap is the foundation of a comfortable wig.

3.Pin the wig cap onto your wig mannequin

Use ball head pins to secure the cap onto a wig mannequin. This keeps the cap from moving while youre crocheting-especially important for beginners.

4.Crochet hair onto the wig cap

  • Put the latch hook through one hole of the cap.
  • Hook a strand of crochet hair(hook the thread look in the middle of the feather crochet hair or the half you fold the bulk braiding hair).
  • Pull it through the cap hole.
  • Grab the hair through the loop and pull it tight to secure.
  • Repeat the same process. Work from the bottom of the cap toward the top. Leave about 1.5-2 inches of space between each crochet strand at the back, and use a smaller, sparser spacing at the front for a more natural hairline.

Valuable Tips to Create a Natural Crochet Wig

First, a quick note: crocheting different curl patterns takes different amounts of time.

Tight afros (small, tight, fluffy curls) conceal the gaps between each crochet strand very well. They are also quicker to finish because you dont need as many strands.

Smooth, large curls or straight hair often require you to add more crochet hair strands to avoid visible gaps. This naturally takes more time and patience.

No matter which texture you choose, the following tips will help you achieve a natural, salon-worthy look.

1.Flip over the crochet hair along the front side

Along the front edge of the cap, insert your latch hook from the bottom of the cap band. Grab a strand of hair(already attached to the front row) and pull it underneath the cap band.

Why this works: This simple trick ensures you can flip your front crochet hair strands backward to completely conceal the cap band to create a much more natural hairline-no one will guess its a DIY wig.

2.Keep crochet strands closer at the crown

When you reach the crown (top) of the head, reduce the spacing between strands. The larger the curl pattern, the closer you should place them.

Why this works:Dense crown coverage prevents the wig from looking flat or see-through from above.

3.Special tips for a straight hair crochet wig

a. Use a crochet wig cap with smaller net holes and a leave-out parting
Choose a cap with smaller net holes and either a slight U-shape lace parting, or customcut the leaveout area yourself.

Why this works: Smaller-hole crochet caps are better suited for straight hair, which requires more precise crocheting. They give you a clearer guideline to evaluate the distribution of your crochet straight hair.

b. Choose kinky straight human crochet hair first, then straighten it

After finishing the initial crochet wig, gently straighten the hair with a lowheat iron. Then check for any visible gaps and add more crochet hair strands where needed.

Why this works: Kinky straight hair has more texture and volume at the roots, which helps hide the cap better. Straightening it afterwards gives you a smooth finish without sacrificing coverage

C.Use double loops (or more) when securing each hair strand
Instead of a single loop, wrap the hair through the cap hole twice before pulling it tight.

Why this works: Double loops create a puffier root, which makes the top of the wig look fuller and helps conceal sparse areas – especially important for straight hair where every gap is visible.

How to Install Your Crochet Wig?

Human hair crochet wigs are beginner-friendly and much cheaper than costly lace wigs. With a strategic leaving-out method using custom cut leave-out caps, you can achieve the same level of natural look.

Below is the basic installation for the full crochet curly wig shown in the video(be used as a half wig with natural front leave-outs). For other pre-cut leave-out caps, simply braid your natural hair, leave out matching sections to blend with the crochet hair, or use clip-in extensions for an even easier flawless finish.

Step 1: Prepare your natural hair

  • Section and braid your front natural hair:

Section your front hair into two parts, the larger outside section along the edges this will be your leave-out. Tie it or clip it away for now.

The smaller inner ring (about 1 inch wide)—create a crown braid that starts from one ear, goes over the top of your head to the other ear, and then continues all the way around the outer perimeter of your head (a full circle). This crown braid will be used to secure the combs pre-attached onto the crochet wig cap.

  • Section and braid the remaining natural hair:

Section and braid the remaining hair into 2-4 larger braided low ponytails. Criss-cross all the braids and clip them like a beehive at the back to secure.

Step 2: Put on your pre-made crochet wig(position & secure)

Place the crochet wig along the crown braid. Secure it by inserting the combs into the middle of the braid. The cap has four small pre-sewn combs one in the front/middle, two on the sides, and one at the back. Insert each comb into the corresponding section of the crown braid.

Step 3:Style and blend the leave-outs with crochet hair

  • Flip over the front edges of the crochet wig those strands you previously pulled underneath the cap band using the latch hook. If needed, tease the roots a little to better conceal the cap band.
  • Release the leave-out hair. Lightly mist it with a mixture of water and leave-in conditioner, then style and blend it with the crochet hair.

Step 4:Frame cut

Trim the blended areas around your face to create a soft, natural frame that matches your face shape. This final step helps the leave-out hair and the crochet wig hair fall together seamlessly.
